The great Fort Rotterdam is an old colonial Dutch fort in Makassar, overlooking the harbor. This is one of the main attractions in Makassar. The fort was built by the Dutch in defending itself around in 1667 but the structure of the first fort built in 1545 by King Tunipalangga with a simple building an earthen wall. Admiral Cornelis Speelman agreed in 1667 and named the fort as the name of his hometown, Rotterdam.
Not long after the fort was rebuilt with a height of 6 meters and 2 meters thick wall, where there is housing the Netherlands and the church. The fort was the headquarters of Dutch colonial rule on the island of Sulawesi. Fort Rotterdam has a function as a bastion of the Dutch until 1937. In the 1970s the fort was restored and replaced its name to the Fort (Fort) Ujung Pandang, This fortress is one of the buildings are properly maintained Dutch in Indonesia.
The Fort Rotterdam has five towers, four towers at each corner and one at the main entrance. Inside are thirteen buildings, eleven made by the Dutch and the two built by the Japanese. The oldest building was built in 1686 and admiral agreeing to the fortress is called home Speelman, even though it has never really lived in the house. The house was used by the governor of the Netherlands to the mid 19th century. But now the building of this fort became a museum, and other structures used as a bed for the staff, prison or warehouse. One of the leaders of the Java war (1825-1830), Indonesia National Heroes of Prince Diponegoro, imprisoned here for 26 years until death in 1855.
This fortress is open daily from 08:00 am until 18:00pm. The entrance fee is free but there are funds donated around Rp. 10.000,. However, the museums are only open Tuesday to Sunday morning from 08:00 until 12:30 with the entrance fee of Rp 7500,
